OHASSTA is a partner of The History Education Network/Histoire et Éducation en Réseau (THEN/HiER). This project has been designed at Carleton University’s Centre for European Studies with the specific needs of Ontario high school teachers and students in mind. Our goal is to promote awareness of international affairs and of Canada’s role in the world, particularly related to Europe and the European Union. Developed by professors and graduate students in consultation with high school teachers, the project offers the following types of resources:

Lesson plans and related materials, geared to the Ontario curriculum for the following courses: CHV2O- Civics; FSF4U (or FSF40); FIF2D; CGW 4U; and CGU 4U. Additional lesson plans are in preparation.

Guest speakers (graduate students and professors who are experts on the European Union and issues related to Europe) for classes and clubs

A website specifically designed for high schools students in Ontario, called EU Learning, which include activities, ideas for independent study projects, and many other useful material (www.eulearning.ca)

Our study area also makes us an ideal resource for students planning group study tours, club trips, or exchanges to Europe. The project is supported by Carleton University and the European Commission.
The Teachers Institute on Canadian Parliamentary Democracy is an intensive professional development opportunity that brings 70 outstanding teachers from across Canada together in Ottawa for an insider´s view on how Parliament works. Through sessions with political, procedural and pedagogical experts, participants engage in a process of critical inquiry into key issues in citizenship and parliamentary democracy. Participants are officially recognized for their excellence in teaching.
   
The goal of the Cultivating Peace initiative is to create classroom-ready resources for schools across Canada that will assist teachers and community leaders to educate for change. The programs created through this initiative will encourage youth to respect diversity, think globally, value human rights, recognize injustice and respond to conflict with methods other than violence. These resources will engage children and youth in the search for a culture of peace in their homes, their schools, their neighbourhoods and their global community.
   
Classroom Connections is a non-profit organization dedicated to initiating positive societal change by producing progressive educational resources for Canada’s youth. Our award-winning resources are ready-to-use, curriculum-aligned and innovative in content and pedagogy. Since 1997, we have provided more than 15 free support resources to 80% of schools nationwide.
   
The contest is designed for interested senior level secondary school students. The aim of the competition is to provide students with an opportunity to test their skills in history against those of students from schools across Canada. Students are provided with a rich variety of primary and secondary sources dealing with national issues and with questions which require them to use the critical thinking skills historians employ in analyzing such sources. The emphasis is on critical thinking skills using primary sources such as political cartoons, paintings, posters, graphs, maps, statistics, songs, speeches, diaries, letters. newspaper articles, and memoirs.
   
ALPHA, In cooperation with people who pursue peace and justice all over the world, and with due respect to the lessons of history, aim to preserve the truthfulness of historical records of the Second World War in Asia, especially the wars of resistance against Japanese aggression and atrocities, with a view to making the Japanese government acknowledge her role in the Asian Holocaust, apologize for its actions and pay compensation for her war crimes, and to correcting the tampered history books.
   
The Ontario History Quest (OHQ) is a website dedicated to student learning and the discovery of Ontario's history - its people, their dreams, struggles and achievements. The OHQ is for students in grades 7, 8, 10 and 12 studying history from 1820-1970.

The Charter Challenge 2005

Students will use the project web site http://lawday.enoreo.on.ca to gather information, share ideas and debate the issues in the online environment. Expert mentors will provide feedback throughout the project.  This will provide them with the necessary background information and a variety of legal opinions on the topic.  A new scenario wil be available for the 2005 project but last year's scenario is there for your interest.
   
Student Vote aims to provide Canadian students with an opportunity to actively participate in a non-partisan parallel election experience, during an official election period.

Our mission is to provide enriching experiences, which will promote citizenship and participation among young Canadians. As individuals involved in Student Vote, we pledge to work with other like-minded organizations to engage young Canadians into civic and community life, to the best of our ability.

Butterfly 208, an art and writing contest sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and its partners, targets Canadian youth between the ages of 14 and 18. It offers you the opportunity to encourage your students to actively explore development issues and voice their opinions on international development.
