The Flag Debate

For nearly a century, Canada had no official flag. Every time Canadians suggested a new symbol to replace the unofficial British Red Ensign, there was controversy. Maple leaves, beavers, crosses, crowns — propositions that went nowhere. In 1964, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson said he'd introduce a new national flag. But Opposition leader John Diefenbaker and the Royal Canadian Legion wanted to stick with the Red Ensign. This website set up by Mark Melynk is of interest for several reasons. If you are looking for a model of how to take a history course and put it on line this is an example. Melynk has sites for World History to 1600, 20th Century, World Religions, and Economics leading to useful information of interest to both other teachers and students. The link to Students Online Binder has teacher ready materials related to each of the courses including student handouts, rubrics, and assignment instructions. Online Resources has excellent links to topics specifically related both to the course and to the specific units studied as well as student reference material for getting materials ready to post to the web themselves. Images Canada

Images Canada provides central search access to the thousands of images held on the websites of participating Canadian cultural institutions. Through Images Canada, you can find images of the Canadian events, people, places and things that make up our collective heritage. You can search across all collections from virtually every page on the site by typing in a keyword in the search box at the top right hand corner of each page. Two lesson plans and an idea bank structured around using primary sources have been developed for Images Canada. This site provides fantastic images of historical maps of Canada. A recent curriculum section has been added.
