Recognising Point of View - Student Backgorunder Sheet

One of the most important skills and historian can have is the ability to determine where an author is coming from when they are writing about an historical topic. It is the duty and the job of historians to be able to determine the position or set of concerns, from which something is observed, presented or considered. Historians try to determine what a person's point of view (perspective, angle, standpoint) is surrounding a topic.

"History as Story and Stories in History"

Ian Hundey, Educational Consultant and Writer, OISE / UT

We understand history as being the story of our past. We often make personal sense of history by relating it to our own stories or family stories. We tell stories from history; we read stories set in the past. Good stories in history engage us intellectually and emotionally, provide us with insights, and allow us to feel empathy for people. We see and feel the stories in historical documents, in visual evidence, in old buildings, in museum artifacts and in treasured antiques. We recognize that "story" and "history" are tightly linked. Listen, Empathize, Analyze

Marc Keirstead, Secondary Consultant, York Region C.D.S.B.

Teaching primary sources has always been a challenge for teachers. Primary sources can include oral sources which allow students to empathize with the personality and gain insights. The focus is on listening skills and how they can be employed with oral primary sources to allow all students to gain some insights into personalities and events. Strategies and a list of resources are provided.
